Truly, Truly Blessed

Know what really sucks? Having to work Every. Single. Holiday. Today is Thanksgiving, a day meant to be devoted to family, and friends, and food. So I was sad, and a little resentful as I headed to work this morning.

I started thinking though, while spending the most boring shift I have ever had in my normally busy deli, I am very blessed.

I am blessed to have a daughter preparing to give birth to her first child, my second grandson. Although she lives far away, she has faithfully kept me informed of every step in her pregnancy. We text or talk almost daily. She looks to me for advice, and for guidance, and I am so grateful for that.

I am blessed to have two other daughters, both beautiful, intellegent young girls who worked hard all day to make an amazing Thanksgiving dinner for us all to enjoy together when I returned from work. The dinner was a wild success, and I am so proud of my girls for being such good cooks so young.

I am blessed to have a son who loves holidays so much that he was in my room first thing this morning asking if it was time to start the turkey yet. I am proud that he has happy memories of holidays, and looks forward to them each year. I am proud of the young man he is becoming.

I am blessed to have another son, who told me today as I was getting ready for work that I wouldnt have to buy him any Christmas presents this year, if I would stay home from work. I am so proud that at the age of ten, he already values people more than things, and knows the importance of family.

I am blessed to have an adorable grandson, who is so excited by the smallest things imaginable. His laughter can cheer me on the worst of days. I am so proud of everything he does, and the mom that Megan is to him.

I am blessed to have family and friends who love me and my children so much that they will go out of their way to make sure our holidays are happy and full of joy.

So yes, I hate having to work on holidays, but I am grateful to have a job. Our dinner was at 6 instead of 2, but our table was full of laughter, and smiles, and great food Now, as my children and I climb on to my bed to watch television, complaining good naturedly about being over full, I know I am blessed. I dont know where we will be this time next year. What I do know is, no matter where we are, we will be together, and for that, I am eternally grateful, and truly, truly blessed.
