Dear Jessica

Day 16: Someone who’s not in your state/ country……………

Dear Jessica,

Again, I find myself wishing that this letter didn’t belong to one of my children.  I really wish you still lived here, if not in my home, at least in the same state that I live in.

You are 21 years old now, older than I was when I had you.  That seems strange to me, because you seem very young to me, still.  Maybe your children always seem young, I’m not sure.  You are my first-born child, so every first for you is a first for me, too, in a way.  I have learned how to be a mom by being your mom.

I want you to know that I am so proud of you.  I know how hard it is to move far away from everyone you have ever known, because I did it too.  I also know how exciting, and liberating it can be.  I want you to enjoy all of it.  You have always made friends easily, so enjoy being young.  Go out, have fun, be a kid for as long as you can.  Look around your apartment, at your furniture, at everything you have, and enjoy knowing that you did it all by yourself.  That is huge, and you should be proud.

I hope that you have learned from my life.  I hope that you never let anyone control your life, in any way.  You were so independent from the time you were a teenager.  Don’t ever lose that independence.  Don’t allow anyone to take your identity.  You are a very loving and trusting person, and that is a good thing.  Just please be sure that you are giving that love and trust to someone who deserves it.

I hope you know I love you more than I could ever express.  You and your brothers and sisters are the most important people in the world to me, and nothing and no one can ever change that.  No matter where you live, or what you do.  You are, and always will be loved.

I want you to know, that no matter where I live, you will always have a home with me.  There is no shame in having to move back home, and you will always be welcome.  I think you know that I would love nothing more than for you to move back in, but don’t do it for me.  If you need to, or if you want to, the option will always be here.

I love you Juicy.  I am really glad to reach the point in our relationship where we can begin to relate as adults, not just mother and child.  I will always be your mom, but I am proud and honored to consider you my friend, as well.
